“As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings:” Deuteronomy 32:11
The Lord, many times in the scriptures refers to Himself through parables as a Great Eagle. He soars above all and is Master of all He surveys from on high. Yet, even from the heights of Heaven, He looks down upon man and has an eternally overflowing affection for him. There is none creation above man in God’s eyes. But, there is that sin still that separates us from Him, and whilst we remain sinful, we can but only look up to the Heavens, where is our Holy Creator Who longs for us to be close to Him, looking back at us.
It was this longing, this abundant affection that has no equal, that caused God to become Man. How greatly did the first beast, the lion with eagle’s wings that were plucked and was set to stand as a man did represent Christ in Ezekiel’s vision! Jesus left His throne and came here to be God among us, that we might be found righteous by accepting Him and believing!
Now, being found in Him, we are plucked from the pit, where the vipers lay in wait to devour whomever they find there. That old devil, the first and chiefest of them all, who directs every other tricky snake to perform his will before God’s is always present there, whispering, injecting venomous falsehood into all who remain. Praise God that he pulled us out! But praise Him all the more that He no longer views us as sinful wretches, but we, who are hidden in His Only Begotten Son, He now sees as His Son. He sees the Blood, and thus, sees His own. As His own, He provides us new hearts and makes us to be new creations. We become His children, His young eagles. He gives us gifts, and the Spirit of Life, that we may become more like Jesus, and as we grow in Him, closer to Him, and more mature in our walk with Him, He sends us out, first carried on His wings, then, as any eaglet is brought out of the nest, He eventually urges us to fly for Him. He tells us through the prophet Isaiah this:
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 49:31
If we rely upon His work, and wait upon Him to decide when we are ready, He will ensure that our wings will be prepared for the flight, but what’s more, prepared for the fight.
You see eagles are birds of prey. They are atop the animals’ food chain, for they are powerful and fly above all of the prey. And what happens to be the prey they seem most equipped to deal with, having mighty talons, and keen eyesight? Snakes.
We become the warriors of Christ in the battle of souls, and He sends us, His children, to dive back into the pit that is this world, and proclaim His name with a loud voice, screeching like the mighty eagle as it swoops it’s prey. We expose the snakes for what and who they are, as Christ swoops along side of us, with us, and within us to pull yet another lost soul out of the pit of despair to be saved and made into Spiritual warriors, just as we, in Him.
It is how He does His best work, through us. He makes us to become more like Him, day by day. He alone changes us and matures us. He alone knows what we will be asked to accomplish, but He alone equips us to do so.
Let us, therefore, wait upon The Lord, and receive from Him what our imaginations cannot even fathom. May we allow Him to grow us near unto the living waters, that we may grow strong in our faith, able to withstand the wiles of the devil, and able to fight for the cause that is Christ, for the salvation of souls! And on that day that He urges us to fly, may we do so, leaning upon Him, trusting God, following that lead of the Holy Spirit to do His will, and soar without being exhausted, blessing our Creator God and glorifying His holy Name.
