“And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, saying,
‘Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: for the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.’
The Apostle Paul was quoting the writings of the great prophet Isaiah, who Jesus also quoted, when the Pharisees refused to believe Him. In fact, this passage is quoted four times in the New Testament, which speaks to its importance to us today who are under this New Covenant. We will speak, just as Jesus did, and just as Paul did, to the world over and over again, and this prophecy will be brought to our remembrance, for it is meant to both comfort us and remind us of our commission. We know and understand because of the entire passage as given by Isaiah in what God told him:
“And He ( The Lord ) said,
‘Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.’
Then said I, Lord, how long? And He answered,
‘Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, and the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.’
Until the end of the age, we will preach it and teach it. The Cross of Christ must continue to be spoken of that all who would come can hear! This work will not cease until He comes again. We are a part of that great remnant of men, a mere ten percent or, which is at this moment, less. We are the children of the Lord, those who are connected like branches to the vine. He is our substance, and our source of all blessing, including that greatest blessing, His very Life, given for our salvation. As such, we will come against opposition, possible every nine out of ten, but that one… the tenth percentile of people. Though most will refuse to hear and refuse to see, we are to reach out, not knowing just who the ten percent are, but trusting God will speak to them through our words, opening their hearts, that they might both see and hear the Truth and awaken their spirit within them.
