“It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised The Lord, saying, For He is good; for His mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord; so that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God.” 2 Chronicles 5:13-14
I read this morning the opening of the book of 2 Chronicles, which is really just a continuation of the book of 1 Chronicles, the two originally having been one. At any rate, I got enveloped in the majestic beauty of Solomon’s temple. As I read of the beautiful detail involved in the construction, from the overlay of gold on the pillars and walls, to the exquisite artistry of chains with fruits and flowers all made from precious metals to the gems and jewels embedded throughout, I had to pause and reflect on something vastly more important today which was staring me right in the face.
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16
We, brothers and sisters are the temples of God! I know this in my spirit and like most of us, I try my utmost to treat this temple accordingly. But, that wasn’t what was glaring at me. What suddenly, unexpectedly, gloriously stood out this morning was of far greater influence.
God ensured that Solomon’s temple was beautifully detailed. He ensured further that the Bible contains those details in written form so that, though we cannot see it for ourselves, we can read of it and imagine the beauty and the minor, yet significant, perfect little details. Why is that important if we are the temples of God?
Because when God made us new creatures is when He made us to be temples. The same detailing that took place in Solomon’s temple took place within us. When God looks upon His children, He sees the beauty that He Himself created. All the little details are within us. Everything is important to Him and He placed it all in us just as He wanted and we are gloriously beautiful as a result! We are fit to be lived in by a perfect, thrice holy God, who loves His beautiful masterpieces.
It brought me to tears to consider this. What’s more is that, because we accepted His Son’s sacrifice, we are fit for the Holy Spirit to minister to us. He does this even now. The Father made us new through our faith in Christ, brought in our High Priest Jesus Who cleansed us with His Blood, and Who sends the sweet Holy Spirit to dwell within us, Who now resides, filling us as the cloud of the temple, and ministers to us forevermore.
Praise Jesus, my beautiful brothers and sisters through Christ, for we are the beautiful temples of the Living God!
