“Much people of the Jews therefore knew that He was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom He had raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.” John 12:9-11
Lazarus was a friend of Jesus. When he died, Jesus brought him back to life, defying the laws of this world as we understand them. It was one of the greatest miracles Jesus ever did, but it was not the only. He performed many miracles, so many, in fact, that the Apostle John told us this:
“And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” John 21:25
Jesus is, on so many levels, a miracle Man! After all, He was born of a virgin. He is God Himself come to us as One of us. The “laws” governing this world in the physical are meaningless against the God Who create the world. But, back to this particular miracle.
The Bible says that the chief priests wanted to put Lazarus to death. Isn’t that interesting? The very thing that Jesus did, they wanted to undo. This miracle, like so many before, needed to be disproved if they were to deny Him before everyone. Of course, their thinking did not get past that, or else they would have considered putting all of the witnesses to death, as well. Perhaps, they did; but, the Bible doesn’t say. It is clear they wanted to erase this miracle because it was drawing people away from them and to Christ.
Has God done something in your life for which you have given Him glory; yet, those around you deny Him chalking it up to luck, chance, your own diligence and planning, or some other force, such as Karma? Have their words discouraged you from sharing anything further? Well, take heart. The world and the devil have been trying to erase the miracles Jesus performed since the world has existed. Satan himself said this about what God said, eluding (on a greater level) to what He also did:
“Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:1b,4b-5
Satan absolutely defied God’s Word from the very beginning and he continues to do so up to this very hour. Everything that God has done in this life, Satan will deny by explaining it all away and taking credit for it by claiming it was done by another means.
Of course, as believers, we know that to be true, though twisted. Everything is either accomplished by God or allowed by God. However, Satan, through the guise of those around us (even if they don’t know it), will do his very best to derail our faith and cause us to become ineffective witnesses for Christ.
So, if this is you today, Lazarus, you are in good company. God is with you and He will use whatever is happening to you regarding your life and your testimony for good because you love Him and you are called according to His purposes.
Stay the course. Lean on God through faith, and not on your own understanding, nor the understanding of those around you who do not believe. Continue to trust God with everything and you will overcome.
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” Revelation 12:11
