“And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.” Deuteronomy 18:17
Moses was addressing the Israelites with the Word of God, as God had spoken it to him. In the middle of passing the Word onto them, God spoke to Moses about what they had said back at Horeb. So, if it was so well spoken, what exactly was it they had said?
At Horeb, they told Moses, “Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the Voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.” Deuteronomy 5:25
They were telling Moses that he should just go speak with the Lord and then come and tell them what He said. God addressed this subject of having a representative man speak to Him on behalf of His people and for Him to His people. Though they didn’t know what they said was so profound and so true, God knew, and He then told Moses that He shall indeed send someone from among them Who shall be such a representative. God just didn’t tell them that He Himself would come down and be born as Man to accomplish this.
We know now, through the New Testament, that He spoke of Jesus when He spoke to Moses this subject. Everything Jesus said, He told us that God the Father was telling Him to speak. All His Words are God’s Words. Jesus would instruct us on just what God’s Will was and still is.
He would come down here, become God’s representative and become our representative simultaneously, thus forming a Covenant, and becoming that Covenant. And God told Moses not only would He speak God’s Words to us, but God would then hold anyone who heard the Word from Jesus accountable.
God was telling them that Jesus would show them the Way. He was telling them that Jesus would be the Way. God took from them the fire and the overwhelming Presence of the Father Himself, and gave us the Son, both God and Man, that we could stand on His gentle Presence and hear the Word of God and not fear death, but instead, believe and embrace life. Not this life, but true life, eternal, everlasting life.
God heard their pleas, and He answered them through Jesus, for them, and for us. Glory to God!
May all of your pleas be answered in such glorious fashion, for the Lord hears them, and He cares for you in every detail of your life. Nothing is too small for God to care, and nothing is too large for God to handle. Trust in Him, and follow the Son. Know that whenever He speaks to us, it is always going to direct us to Jesus and what He accomplished for us on the Cross.
